JULY 20, 2018
Bless those who persecute you. Don't curse them; pray that God will bless them. Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.
   -Romans 12:14-15   (NLT)
Paul gives us something hard to do and something much easier. We are happy with our friends & family who are happy; we sit in sorrow & sadness & support with those who weep. But before that we are told to bless those who aren't as easy to get along with, those who are the thorn in our sides. And to pray that God will bless them. I don't know about you, but I like the "be happy" part better. But blessing those we aren't so inclined to bless is what we are called to do. This is a call to action, hard action. It is also an invitation to a new way. So rather than worry over what my (literal) neighbor will do today I'm to pray that God will bless him (I hope with patience). To do that, I must first let go of my stuff - my worry, frustration, annoyance, fears - only then can I truly ask God to bless him.

JULY 19, 2018
... I give each of you this warning: Don't think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourself by the faith God has given us.
   -Romans 12:3   (NLT)
But what if being honest in our self evaluation doesn't mean thinking we are better than we really are, but less? In a recent conversation with a friend, she told me she thought I was strong, and caring, and doing a good job. And I deflected her words, probably literally shrugging my shoulders as I said I was just putting one foot in front of the other, doing what had to be done. I did say it was by faith that allows me to continue with one foot, then the other every day. In being honest, I should say that strong, caring, & doing a good is job is something I am, not just something I do.
